Crochet Ear Warmer / Winter Headband – Free Pattern

Velvet is a beautiful material that can be used for so many different things. I recently discovered this bright and colourful velvet yarn, which made me think of making a crochet ear warmer to keep my ears warm during winter! And I love how it turned out!

The yarn feels soft and fluffy – perfect for cold weather!

I’m using just one type of stitch – half double crochets – the same stitch as in my Infinity Scarf pattern. But the difference is that here they are worked into the spaces between the stitches in the previous row.

This ear warmer pattern is very easy, which makes it a great crochet project for beginners. It’s also a super quick make! They would make great last minute crochet gifts!

Make matching fingerless gloves to go with these headbands! This crochet pattern is also very simple and will be easy for beginners.

Average Head Circumference

Women: Small = 21″ (53cm), Medium 22″ (56cm), Large 23″ (58.5cm)

Men: Small = 22″ (56cm), Medium 23″ (58.5cm), Large 24″ (61cm)

For child/teen sizes see detailed chart on Craft Yarn Council’s website.

How to make the right size

Measure your head circumference (where your headband will be sitting). Generally you would need to make a headband 2-3 inches shorter than your head circumference as the headband will stretch. But depending on your yarn and the type of stitch you are using it will stretch differently. If possible, try it on when you get to about 19 inches (for adults) by wrapping it around your head. That way you’ll see how well it stretches, how many rows you still need to crochet and the size will be most accurate.

Crochet Ear Warmer Pattern Notes

The Ear Warmer is worked flat in back and forth rows and stitched together at the end

The width of this headband is 3.5″ (9cm). You can make a wider headband by chaining more for your foundation chain.

You can make a smalller headband (kid size) or a bigger size by working less or more rows.
