I love making cowls, and for good reason! They’re short and sweet, just the right size to wrap snugly around your neck, keeping you cozy and warm. Plus, they’re super quick to crochet!
This winter, I made the Cozy Crochet Cowl pattern, and I’m excited to share it with you. It’s soft, warm, and just the perfect size – hope you enjoy making it as much as I did!
About the Stitch
For this pattern, I used the Elizabeth stitch, also known as the Mini Bean stitch. It creates a wonderfully soft and plush fabric that’s perfect for keeping you warm and cozy.
The stitch is super beginner-friendly -if you’re familiar with puff stitches, you’ll find this even easier. It has fewer steps and a slight tweak in where to insert your hook, which gives it that lovely slanted texture.
I decided to use a larger hook than what’s usually recommended for this yarn. It helps create more space both between and within the stitches, giving the fabric a softer, looser feel – perfect for a cozy, drapey look!
About the Yarn
For this project, I used Moda Vera Valley in the color Coachella. It’s a light worsted-weight yarn (#3), though it feels slightly closer to a worsted weight or somewhere in between the two. If you’d like to substitute, Lionbrand Mandala or a similar yarn would work well!
You could also go with a worsted weight yarn—just keep in mind you might need to adjust the number of chains, rows, and your crochet hook size to match the yarn.
Difficulty level
This pattern is suitable for advanced beginners.

Cozy Cowl Crochet Pattern Instructions
Ch 41 or any odd number of chains.
Row 1: Insert hook into the third Ch, YO, and pull up a loop. You’ll have two loops on your hook. YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop. Four loops on your hook. YO and pull through all four loops on your hook. Ch 1 to complete the Mini Bean stitch. *Skip one chain, work the next Mini Bean stitch into the next Ch. Repeat from * across the row. (20 stitches in every row)
The swatch below is made with a different yarn for better clarity. If you’d like to see more step-by-step photos, check out the Elizabeth Stitch Crochet – Free Coaster Pattern, where I use the same stitch and provide detailed instructions.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Work the first Mini Bean stitch into the gap on the side of the first stitch, as indicated in the photo below. Then, continue working Mini Bean stitches into the gaps of each stitch across the row. Ch 1, turn.
Tip: Gently stretch the fabric to make it easier to spot the stitch where you need to insert your hook. It’s not the larger gap, but the smaller one right next to it – refer to the photo below.
Rows 3-71 or until you reach your desired circumference: Repeat row 2.
Fasten off and leave a long tail (approximately 35 inches/90cm) to sew the sides together.
Assembling the cowl
Thread the yarn needle with the yarn tail and lay the cowl flat on a table. Fold both sides up so they meet in the middle. If you like, you can secure the sides with stitch markers or safety pins, but this step is optional. Use your preferred sewing method (I like using the Mattress stitch) to seam the sides together.
Fasten off and weave in all yarn tails.
I hope you enjoyed making this cozy crochet cowl with me!
