Free Crochet Easter Basket Pattern – 2 Sizes (Egg & Treat)

Easter is almost here, and this little basket is exactly what you need. This free crochet easter basket pattern is easy, quick, and so satisfying to make.

I made two sizes – a Mini Basket (Egg Size) that’s about 2.5″ diameter and a Medium Basket (Treat Size) that is just a little bigger, about 5.5″ diameter. Both have a cute handle, and both are made with 100% cotton yarn in a super bulky weight and a 6.5mm hook.

I find that cotton works beautifully for baskets. It holds its shape really well and gives you a nice, firm structure. And the thicker the yarn, the sturdier your basket will be.

The handle on the Mini basket is nice and sturdy, and it stands up on its own. The handle on the Medium basket is a bit longer, so it doesn’t stand up quite as well… I had to prop it up with the bunny’s ears 😄

If you prefer, you can make the handle on the medium basket a little shorter so it stands upright on its own. Another option is to add pipe cleaners into the handle as you crochet, which helps make it stronger and more structured.

The pattern is beginner-friendly. If you know how to single crochet and work in the round, you are ready for this one. A couple of hours is all it takes.

Two Sizes – Which One Is Right for You?

Mini Basket (Egg Size)

This little guy is SO adorable. Tiny and precious, and honestly, you will want to make ten of them.

Perfect for:

  • Filling with mini chocolate eggs and leaving them on the dinner table as a place setting
  • Tucking a small gift or gift card inside
  • Easter egg hunt prizes (fill and hide around the garden!)
  • Decorating a shelf or Easter vignette
  • A sweet handmade gift with a little treat inside

Medium Basket (Treat Size)

A little more room, a little more Easter magic.

Perfect for:

  • Toddler and kids Easter baskets
  • A handful of chocolate eggs and a small toy
  • Gifting to a friend or neighbour – so much cuter than a store-bought basket
  • Holding small ornaments or spring flowers as a decoration
  • A little gift basket for a coworker, teacher, or anyone who deserves something sweet

Both sizes are the perfect excuse to buy yarn in every pastel colour you can find.

What Yarn Is Good for Baskets?

Not all yarn works well for crochet baskets. Between acrylic and cotton, I personally prefer cotton because it’s naturally firmer. This helps your basket hold its shape beautifully without needing stiffener spray, plastic canvas inserts, or any extra steps. The taller you make your basket, the thicker your yarn should be so it can stand up nicely on its own.

Using super bulky cotton is a great option. Your basket will work up quickly and have a lovely chunky texture. It’s firm enough to stand on its own, yet still soft enough for little hands to carry around. If you don’t have super bulky cotton, you can use two strands of worsted-weight yarn held together instead.

T-shirt yarn is also a popular choice for baskets. It’s thicker and creates very sturdy, structured baskets with a modern look.

For colours, you can go soft and spring-inspired with pastel shades like soft yellow, baby pink, mint green, or sky blue. Or have a bit of fun with bolder tones like coral, lilac, or sage green. Easter is the perfect time to play with colour!

Instructions

Bottom (Mini & Medium Baskets)

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 2 (counts as the first dc), then work 11 dc into the ring. Sl st to the first st to join the round. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as the first dc), turn. Work 1 dc in the first st, then 2 dc in each stitch around. Sl st to join. (24 sts)

For Mini Basket, continue to Body.

Medium Basket

Round 3: Ch 2, turn. Work 1 dc in the first st and 1 dc in the next st, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st. Repeat from * around. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, turn. Work 1 dc in the first st and 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (48 sts)

Body

Before you start working on the body, check if your circle is curling up. If it is, gently stretch the last round so it lies flat on the table.

Make a slip stitch in the back loop only of the first stitch and place a marker in that stitch. This will help you keep track of the beginning of the round as you’ll now be working in spiral rounds.

Work one single crochet in the back loop only of the next stitch and in each stitch around. When you reach the marker, don’t join the round; just keep working in a continuous spiral in the back loops only until you have completed 4 rounds for the mini size or 6 rounds for the medium size.

Handle and Border

After completing 4 (mini) or 6 (medium) rounds, work a Sl st in the next st and Ch 25 (mini) or 35 (medium) loosely. Skip 11 stitches for the mini size or 23 stitches for the medium size, and work a slip stitch in the back loop only of the 12th (mini) or 24th (medium) stitch. Continue working slip stitches in the back loop only until you reach the handle on the other side.

Flip the handle to the front and keep working slip stitches into the back loops all the way around the top edge of the basket until you reach the handle again.

When you reach the handle again, start working slip stitches along the handle, inserting your hook into the back bumps of each chain. If this feels a bit tricky with a 6.5 mm hook, you can switch to a smaller hook, as it’s easier to work into the stitches. I used a 4 mm hook for the slip stitches on the handle.

Once you reach the end of the handle, join it back to the top of the basket body with a slip stitch to secure it neatly.

Fasten off, weave in all ends!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different yarn?
Yes! Any super bulky yarn works. Avoid very soft, fluffy yarns – they make floppy baskets.

Can I make the basket bigger?
Yes – just keep adding increasing rounds to the base, then work straight up the sides.

How do I keep my basket stiff?
The combination of cotton yarn and a tight tension does most of the work. If you’d like it even sturdier, you can spray it with a fabric stiffener.

Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
You only need to know how to work single crochet and crochet in the round.

Can I sell items made from this pattern?
Yes! Please credit My Crochet Space as the designer.
