This cozy, chunky crochet cowl wraps you in warmth and softness like a warm hug. Made with super bulky yarn, it works up incredibly fast. With just 22 rows, it comes together in no time, making it a perfect, quick and satisfying project! 😊

I used two different colours, one skein of each, to create a bold, colour-blocked cowl. I love how you can switch it up – wear the lighter colour in front and the darker in the back, or flip it around depending on your mood that day! 🙂

Originally, I planned to make a super chunky scarf with this yarn, but as I got near the end, I wasn’t loving how it looked. The length was fine for a regular scarf, but with all that chunkiness, it just felt a bit short. However, making it longer would have made it too long.

As I was thinking it over, I wrapped it around my neck and instantly loved how warm, cozy, and perfectly chunky it felt. It didn’t need anything more. So, turning it into a cowl was definitely the right choice! 😊

About the Stitch

This pattern uses treble crochet stitches, which are worked around the stitches (posts) instead of into the stitches, creating a beautifully textured, three-dimensional fabric.

Treble crochet is similar to double crochet but with an extra step to make it taller.

How to make a treble crochet:
YO twice, insert your hook into the specified stitch, YO and pull up a loop (you should have four loops on your hook). YO, pull through two loops, YO, pull through two loops, YO, and pull through the last two loops.

About the Yarn

I used the super bulky yarn Moda Vera Monkey. It’s similar to the Lionbrands Hometown yarn. But if you like to use any other bulky or super bulky yarn, just adjust the number of stitches and rows to make your size.

This pattern is best suited for intermediate crocheters.

Chunky Cowl Crochet Pattern Notes

  • This cowl pattern is worked flat in back-and-forth rows and then sewn together.
  • To adjust the height of the cowl, make any odd number of chains.
  • Work more or fewer rows to adjust the width (circumference) of the cowl.
  • Ch 4 at the beginning of rows counts as the first TR.
  • The last TR in each row goes in the turning chain.
  • Make sure you’re not crocheting too tightly – it should be on the looser side for a softer fabric. If your tension is tight, try using a larger hook.
  • Watch a short video demonstration on how to make FPTR and BPTR.

Chunky Cowl Crochet Pattern Instructions

Ch 27 or any odd number of chains for the height of your cowl.

Row 1: TR in the 6th ch from the hook and in each ch across the row. (23 sts in total, including the turning chain)

Row 2: Ch 4, FPTR around the next TR from the row below, BPTR around the next TR from the row below; repeat across the row, alternating front post and back post treble crochet. Finish with a TR into the turning chain at the end of the row.

Watch a short video demonstration of the front post and back post treble crochet stitches.

Row 3: repeat row 2.

After finishing one ball of yarn, join the next one and continue working until you have the same number of rows in each colour. I had 11 rows in each colour, with a total length of 24 inches (61 cm).

Fasten off, leaving a long tail (approximately 35 inches/90 cm) to sew the sides together.

Assembling the Cowl

Fold the cowl in half and sew the sides together using your preferred method. There is no right or wrong side, so it doesn’t matter how you fold it – it looks the same on both sides.

Fasten off and weave in all yarn tails. I hope you enjoyed making this crochet cowl with me!
