Crochet baskets make a lovely addition to any home decor, and the best part is – you can easily make one yourself! It’s simpler than you might think – all you need is some super bulky yarn and a large crochet hook. If you’ve ever wanted to try but weren’t sure how to begin, this crochet basket pattern is the perfect starting point.

When it comes to crocheting baskets, the thicker the yarn, the faster you’ll finish – and the sturdier your basket will be. There are plenty of yarn types you can use, and once you’ve tried this pattern, you’ll be able to experiment with different kinds to create your own unique look.
I made two baskets – one slightly larger with handles and a smaller one without handles. By following the instructions below, you can easily adjust the width and height to create your own cute and functional crochet basket!
The smaller basket has a base of four rounds. I didn’t add handles for two reasons: I thought it looked cute without them, and honestly, they weren’t really needed. Plus, no matter how I tried, the stitch count just wouldn’t cooperate – there was always one stitch too many or too few to place the handles evenly. So I took it as a sign and left it as is!
The bigger crochet basket has five rounds in the base, and it’s kind of amazing how just one extra round can really bump up the size!
About the Stitch
I used puff stitches to make these baskets. These puff stitches are less puffy than the usual ones, with only five loops on the hook before you complete the stitch.
I reduced the number of yarn-over-repeats (or better to say, how many times you yarn over, insert your hook into the same loop and pull up a loop) in this pattern – the more common puff stitch has three yarn-over-repeats, but here, I used only two.
The regular version of a puff stitch was getting too thick and harder to work with. This slimmer puff stitch works well with super bulky yarn and, in my opinion, is sturdy enough for a basket.
To make a Puff stitch: yarn over, insert hook into the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have three loops on your hook now. Yarn over again, insert the hook into the same stitch and pull up another loop. You should have five loops on your hook now. Yarn over and pull through all five loops. Yarn over again and pull through the loop to finalise the puff stitch.
About the Yarn
I used Moda Vera Monkey (colours Mushroom and Dusty). It’s a super bulky yarn #6 (14 ply). You can use any super bulky-weight yarn of your choice!
