With the colder weather approaching, it’s the perfect time to create something cozy to keep you warm! I recently made a set of fingerless gloves and a matching ear warmer, and I love how they turned out!
What I love about this design is that it features the herringbone half double crochet, which creates a gorgeous diagonal texture. Both the ear warmers and gloves are worked in the round, without turning, which really makes that texture shine. 🙂
I used a lighter color yarn for contrast, but you can easily stick to just one color. Another fun idea is to try self-striping yarn. Just remember, the colors won’t line up exactly, so you’ll need to embrace the unique variations it creates in your gloves. Give it a go, and let me know how it turns out – I’d love to hear about your experience!
About the Yarn
This post may include affiliate links, view my disclosure policy for details.
I used Lionbrand Hue + Me, a chunky wool blend. It’s a #5 bulky yarn, 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool, one skein (137yds/125m). It’s very thick and is perfect for creating warm accessories or clothes. I made slippers using this yarn, too, and I really like how warm and cozy they are.
About the Stitch
I used the Herringbone half double crochet for this headband.

Crochet Ear Warmer & Gloves Pattern
Difficulty Level
This pattern is suitable for intermediate-level skills. You should be familiar with techniques such as switching between colours and working in the round. Additionally, the pattern uses foundation herringbone half double crochet stitches, but you can use the traditional method of chaining.
Materials
- I used Lionbrand Hue + Me in Desert and Saffron. You can use any bulky #5 weight yarn in any colour of your choice.
- Yardage: 1 skein (137yd/125m) in Saffron and 1 skein (137yd/125m) in Desert will make one pair of gloves and a headband.
- Crochet hook 7mm.
- Scissors, yarn needle, measuring tape.
Gauge
9 stitches x 4.5 rows in HHDC = 4″ (10cm)
Abbreviations (US Terms)
Ch = chain
St(s) = stitch(es)
Sl St = slip stitch
HHDC = herringbone half double crochet
FHHDC = foundation half double crochet
Headband & Gloves Pattern Notes
- The headband & gloves pattern uses foundation herringbone half double crochet instead of the starting chain to create more stretch in the first row. Alternatively, you can use an 8mm hook and make a chain.
- The headband and gloves are both worked in the round, crocheting in the same direction in each round without turning.
- You can adjust the width of the headband and the length of the gloves by working more or fewer rounds.
- You can adjust the circumference of the headband and the width of the gloves by adjusting the number of foundation stitches (any number).
- The colours are indicated in the ( ) for each round.
Headband Sizes
Measure the circumference of your head or the head of the person you’re making the headband for. Since the headband will stretch, it’s best to make it about 2-3 inches shorter than the actual head measurement, depending on the yarn and stitch you’re using.
For instance, if the head circumference is 22 inches, aim for a foundation row measuring 19-20 inches.
Small = head circumference 22″ (56cm)
Medium = head circumference 23″ (58.5cm)
Large = head circumference 24″ (61cm)
Headband Finished Size
Ear Warmer Length: 9.5′′ (24cm) Width: 3.5″ (9cm)
Crochet Ear Warmer Instructions
Round 1 (Saffron): Make 41 FHHDC (Small), or 43 (Medium), or 45 (Large), or any number until you reach your desired size (approx. 2 inches less than the head circumference). The foundation row should be slightly stretched when measured.
Connect the row with a Sl St to create a circle. Continue to Round 2.
If chaining instead of foundation stitches, use an 8 mm crochet hook and make a chain with the corresponding number for your size. Then, switch to a 7mm hook and join the round with a Slip Stitch to form a circle. Rd 1: Ch 1, work a HHDC in the first St and each St around. You should have the same number of stitches as you chained. Join the round with a Sl St. Continue to Round 2.
Round 2 (Desert): Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), working in the same direction, do not turn, work a HHDC in the first St, and every stitch around. Join the round with a Sl St. Make sure you have the same number of stitches in every round.
Round 3-6: Repeat round 2, switching between the colours in each round.
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Connect the first round (foundation row) as you weave in the end.
Crochet Fingerless Gloves
Additional Gloves Pattern Notes
- The gloves are worked from the top down, starting from the finger opening and then crocheted down toward the wrist.
- The numbers in parentheses at the end of each round indicate the total stitch count for each size (small, medium, large).
- The right and left gloves are identical for the first five rounds; from Round 6 onward, follow the separate instructions for each hand.
Hand Sizes
Measure around the widest part of your hand (excluding the thumb) with a tape measure. For example, if your hand measures 7 inches around, follow the small-size directions.
- Small – hand circumference 7″ (18cm)
- Medium – hand circumference 7.5″ (19cm)
- Large – hand circumference 8″ (20cm)
Instructions are given for the Small size, with modifications for Medium and Large sizes in parentheses, following this exact order: Small (Medium, Large).
Gloves Finished Sizes
Small = Length: 6″ (15cm), Width (at the widest point): 3.75″ (9.5cm)
Medium = Length: 6.5″ (16.5cm) Width (at the widest point): 4″ (10cm)
