Whenever I learn a new stitch, I like to make something useful or just something cute for fun. The Elizabeth stitch, also known as the Mini Bean stitch, is perfect for a variety of crochet projects. Coasters are one of the many things you can create with this lovely stitch. I hope you enjoy learning it while making a couple of pretty coasters for your home!
I chose bright summer colors for these coasters, and I love how cheerful and summery they turned out. Feel free to use your own colors to match any season you like. It’s a fun, easy project to practice the Elizabeth stitch and your crochet skills!
Crochet Elizabeth Stitch (aka Mini Bean Stitch)
The Elizabeth crochet stitch, also known as the Mini Bean stitch, is a super easy stitch that creates a lovely, textured, slightly thicker fabric. It’s a simple one-row repeat that you’ll remember after just a few rows. The rich texture it creates looks beautiful on coasters and works great for larger projects like cozy blankets and stylish scarves. If you’re looking to add a fun and versatile stitch to your crochet toolkit, the Elizabeth stitch is definitely worth trying!
Difficulty
Easy / Advanced Beginner. This stitch isn’t too hard, but it might be a bit tricky for absolute beginners since you need to pull through four loops at once. Make sure to choose a yarn that doesn’t split easily. You’ll know if the yarn is splitting when you start crocheting and the threads start separating and getting caught on your hook.

Elizabeth Coasters Pattern Notes
- This crochet coaster measures 4.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches long. The size can be easily adjusted by chaining more or less for your foundation chain (any odd number of chains) and working more or fewer rows.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a row is a turning chain and does not count as a stitch.
Crochet Coasters Written Pattern
Ch 19 or any odd number of chains.
Row 1: Insert hook into the third Ch, YO, and pull up a loop. You’ll have two loops on your hook. YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop. Four loops on your hook. YO and pull through all four loops on your hook. Ch 1 to complete the stitch. You just made one Elizabeth stitch. See the photos below for each step.
*Skip one chain, work the next Elizabeth stitch into the next Ch. Repeat from * across the row. (9 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Work the first Elizabeth stitch into the gap on the side of the first stitch, as indicated with the yarn needle in the photo below. Then, continue working Elizabeth stitches into the gaps of each stitch across the row. Ch 1, turn.
Tip: Stretch the fabric to make it easier to see the stitch you need to insert your hook into. It’s not the bigger gap you see in the photo above, but the one right next to it, see photo below.
Rows 3-7: Repeat row 2. After completing the seventh row, measure the length and height of the coaster. The height in one colour should be half of the total length of your coaster. For example, if the length is 4 inches, the height should be 2 inches in one colour and 2 inches in a different colour. This way, you’ll have a perfect square with two colours divided in the middle. So, if you are happy with the height, fasten off and join the new colour yarn.
Row 8-14: With the new colour, Ch 1 and repeat row 2.
Fasten off and weave in all ends!
Blocking
These coasters will need blocking. Wet the coasters under running water or spray them using a spray bottle with clean water. Lay them on a piece of cardboard or, if you have a blocking board, pin the corners and the sides in a perfect square, and they’ll dry, maintaining that shape!
The Elizabeth stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides. I think it would work really well for blankets, throws, shawls, scarves. What would you make using this stitch?
Enjoy, and Happy Crocheting!
