The gloves are worked flat in back and forth rows. You start by chaining for the length of your glove (your desired length) and then working in rows until your hand can be wrapped around.

You should make it quite snug fitting as you don’t want your gloves to be too loose. So, as soon as the two sides meet (when wrapped around your hand, see picture below) that’s when you have to start sewing the sides together.

This stitch is not going to stretch too much, so make sure your hand fits inside comfortably but is not too loose or too tight. When you get to about 6-7 inches (15-18cm) in width, start checking the size working one row at a time.

If you like this basic crochet fingerless gloves pattern you can make matching ear warmers using the same yarn. One skein of Vel-Luxe will be enough to make a couple of gloves and ear warmers!

Difficulty level

Easy. It’s a basic, beginner friendly fingerless gloves pattern. If you can crochet half double crochet stitches then you’ll be able to make these gloves! All you need to do is to make a flat rectangle as pictured below and then stitch it together, leaving a hole for your thumb.

This pattern is basic and there are no complicated stitches or decreasing & increasing of stitches. It’s perfect for beginners and someone wanting just a basic, entry level glove pattern. This pattern can be a starting point and from here you can customize it as you like – use different type of crochet stitches or type of yarn.

About the Yarn

I used Lionbrand Vel-Luxe yarn. I like it because it’s very soft, fluffy and squishy which makes it perfect for winter makes. I found it very easy to work with and didn’t have any issues with the quality of the yarn.

The only thing I would mention though, try to reduce re-doing the stitches when possible as it may loose some of the velvety coating. This is not to say that you can’t do that at all. I had to re-do some big portions of a glove and it was totally fine as my tension was quite loose. Just be cautios if your tension is tight and un-doing multiple times the same area may loose a small amount of velvet. Other than that, I loved everything about it!

If you like to try another type of yarn, Lionbrand has many other options for medium weight (4) worsted yarn that’s worth taking a look!

Crochet Pattern Notes

The gloves are worked flat lengthwise to make a rectangle (or square) and then stitched together on the side of the thumb.

The Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

You can make shorter gloves by chaining less for your foundation chain.

This pattern is for a small adult size hand. You can make wider or narrower gloves by working more or fewer rows.

Written Instructions

Ch 30 (or less for shorter gloves).

Row 1: HDC in second Ch from hook and across the row (29). Turn, Ch 1

Row 2-18 (or until you can wrap it around your hand): HDC in first and every St across the row. Repeat until you reach the desired width of your glove.

Put your hand on top of your work as pictured above and wrap the other side around to see if the two sides are touching.

Sew the sides together with the yarn needle, leaving a hole for your thumb (approx. 2″), approx. 2-3″ down from top.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
