Houndstooth Crochet Headband – Canyon Ridge

This houndstooth crochet headband is a fun and quick crochet project! The pattern uses basic crochet stitches in a specific order that creates an interesting texture. Using two contrasting colours with this crochet stitch brings out the houndstooth pattern. It’s fun to watch the houndstooth pattern come to life with each round.

This ear warmer is reversible, and you’ll notice a subtle difference in how the colours influence the overall appearance of the headband. On one side, it appears lighter, while on the other side, the red (Canyon) colour is more prominent. See below for comparison. I have to say, I kind of prefer the lighter version (photo on the right). Which one is your favorite?

I used Lionbrands Two of Wands Color Theory in Moonbeam and Canyon. (100% Acrylic, 246yds/225m). There are plenty of colours to choose from, so pick something that speaks to you!

About the Stitch

I used the Houndstooth stitch for this headband. The nature of the Houndstooth stitch is that it features two contrasting colours. While the actual crochet stitch used is the Lemon Peel Stitch (also known as the Griddle stitch), the use of two colours transforms it into the houndstooth pattern. So, in short, the Houndstooth stitch is the same as the Lemon Peel stitch (aka Griddle stitch) but with a difference that it uses two (or more) contrasting colours that are switched in each row.

Difficulty

This pattern is suitable for intermediate-level skills. You should be familiar with techniques such as joining new colours, swapping between colours, and working in the round. Additionally, the pattern uses foundation single crochet stitches to make the first row more elastic.

While the stitch itself is pretty easy, switching between the two colours and working in the round may pose a challenge for beginners. That being said, if you’re an advanced beginner looking to learn and practice new techniques and expand your crochet skills, it’s absolutely doable! Just give yourself plenty of time. 🙂

Houndstooth Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern

Difficulty Level

Intermediate.

Dimensions

Width: 4″ (10 cm)

Length: 9′′ (23 cm)

Gauge

7 Sts x 7 rows in Lemon Peel stitch (also known as the Griddle stitch) = 2′′ (5cm)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Ch = chain

FSC = foundation single crochet (short video demonstration  here.)

St(s) = stitch(es)

Sl St = slip stitch

SC = single crochet

DC = double crochet

Colour A = Moonbeam

Colour B = Canyon

Materials

• Yarn:  Lionbrands Two of Wands Color Theory in Moonbeam and Canyon, approx. 40 yds/36 m in each colour (total 80 yds/73 m)
• Alternatively, you can use any medium worsted #4 yarn.
• Crochet hook 5mm (7mm if starting with the chain)
• Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

Crochet Houndstooth Ear Warmer Pattern Notes

• This headband pattern uses foundation single crochet instead of the starting chain to create more stretch in the first row. Alternatively, you can use a 7mm hook and make a chain.
• The Ear Warmer is worked in the round.
• You can adjust the width of this headband by working more or fewer rounds.
• You can adjust the circumference of your headband by adjusting the number of foundation stitches (any even number).
• The starting row (or chain) should be 2-3 inches shorter than your head circumference.

Headband Sizing

Measure the circumference of your or the person you’re making it for head. Usually, it’s a good idea to make a headband that’s 2-3 inches shorter than your head’s circumference, as the headband will stretch.

Crochet Houndstooth Headband Instructions

Round 1: With Colour A, Make 60 FSC (Small), or 62 (Medium), or 64 (Large), or any even number until you reach your desired size (2-3 inches less than the head circumference; see Headband Sizing).

Connect the row with a Sl St to create a circle. Continue to Round 2.

Note: if you’re using Color Theory yarn, the foundation row may seem short as this yarn is somewhat elastic. Stretch your foundation row out a few times before measuring. You can always try for size before connecting the round.

Alternatively, use a 7 mm crochet hook and make a chain with the corresponding number of chains for your size. Then, switch to a 5mm hook and join the round with a Slip Stitch to form a circle. Ch 1, work a SC in the same St and each St around. You should have the same number of stitches as you chained. Join the round with a Sl St. Continue to Round 2.

Round 2: Ch 1, SC in the same St, *DC in next St, SC in next St, repeat from * until the end of this round. You should end with a DC in last St. Join the round with a Sl St.

Round 3: Join colour B, Ch 2 and turn. Pull tight both yarns to secure the yarn switch. Work a SC in first St (into the DC in the previous round), DC in next St (into the SC in the previous round). Continue alternating SC and DC until the end of the round. You should finish again with the DC in the last St.

After your last DC, take both colours A and B and join the round using both yarns with a Sl St.

Round 4: Ch 1 with the new colour only for the next round and tighten that chain, see photo below. Ch 1 again, and turn. *SC in first St, DC in next St, repeat from * around. After your last DC, take both colours A and B and join the round using both yarns with a Sl St, the same way you did in the previous round.

Rounds 5-13: repeat round 4, switching between colours in each round. Round 13 should be in colour A (the same colour as you started the headband with).

Round 14: Still with colour A: Ch 1, (do not turn) SC in each St around, join round with Sl St.

Fasten off and weave in all ends. If you started with a single crochet foundation row, you’d need to connect the first round as you weave in the end; see the photo above.
