The treble crochet stitch (US terms), also known as the triple crochet, is a tall stitch used in crochet projects. While it is a basic stitch, it isn’t as frequently used as the single or double crochet stitches. Learning the treble crochet stitch is easy, especially if you are already familiar with single and double crochet stitches.

This tutorial covers treble crochet in US terms (known as double treble crochet in the UK).

Follow the six steps below to make a treble crochet:

  1. Yarn over twice.
  2. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You’ll have four loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook. You’ll have three loops on hook.
  5. Yarn over again and pull through two loops on your hook, you’ll have two loops on your hook left.
  6. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on your hook. That’s one Treble Crochet stitch!

As you can see, reading through the steps might seem long, but actually doing them is much quicker and easier! The steps are similar to a double crochet stitch. Only here, you’ll start with two yarn overs, and then proceed just like with a double crochet, with the additional step of yarning over and pulling through two loops.

Treble crochet stitches are taller than double crochet stitches, creating larger spaces between each stitch. This makes them perfect for lacy crochet patterns where you want to achieve an airy, open look in your project.

YO and pull up a loop. You will have four loops on your hook.

After you complete the first treble crochet, you’ll notice the skipped four chains next to your treble crochet. This chain of four stitches (turning chain) counts as a stitch.

Continue working treble crochets in every stitch until the end of the chain. At the end of the row, you’ll have 11 treble crochet stitches plus the turning chain, so 12 stitches in total.

How to Start the Next Row of Treble Crochet

Ch4 and turn. This counts as the first stitch unless specified otherwise in your crochet pattern.

Then work the first TR into the next St, following the same steps as in the row below.

The last TR should be worked into the top loop of the turning chain (Ch4) from the previous row.

Most of the time, the turning chain will count as the first stitch. However, you’ll need to check the specific pattern you’re following, as it will specify whether this is the case.

What can you make with a treble crochet stitch?

The treble crochet stitch is perfect for making a variety of items like shawls, scarves, blankets, and cardigans. It creates an open, airy, lace-like design that adds a touch of elegance to any project.

I hope you find this treble crochet stitch tutorial useful. Happy crocheting! 🙂
