Misty Crochet Neck Warmer – Free Pattern

Looking for a quick crochet project to keep you warm in the cooler season? This crochet neck warmer pattern is easy to make, loaded with beautiful texture and, most importantly, is soft, warm and cozy. It’s the perfect combination if you ask me 🙂

I crocheted this crochet cowl for the colder seasons because I’m someone who easily feels the chill, even when I’m indoors! It’s a must for me to keep my hands, feet, and neck warm in winter, or I just can’t function properly. 😊 I rely on thick, warm socks for my feet, and I also like having something snug and cozy around my neck, be it this neck warmer or the Fireside neck warmer.

And who doesn’t like a bit of variety, right? So, this year, I came up with the Misty fingerless gloves and the Misty cowl as a matching set. They look pretty cute together, don’t you think?

About the Stitch

I used Even Moss stitch for this cowl. Even Moss stitch is one of my favourite stitches when I want to create a beautiful texture and at the same time have that comfy and squishy feel, which makes it perfect for cozy winter makes and blankets.

If you ever want to crochet a baby blanket, the Moss Stitch is also great for that. This stitch is reversible and looks the same on both sides. The stith is easy enough for beginners, as it uses only two types of crochet stitches – slip stitch and half double crochet.

To crochet the Even Moss stitch, work a slip stitch in the first and a half double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat for as long as you need. On the next row, work slip stitches into slip stitches and half double crohets into half double crochet stitches.

Difficulty level

Easy. The neck warmer is worked flat in back-and-forth rows and then sewn together at the end. This design makes it very easy for advanced beginners or intermediate-level crocheters, as you don’t need to crochet in the round.

You are going to make a simple rectangle using the Even Moss stitch and then join the sides with a yarn needle. You’ll need to know how to chain, slip stitch and half double crochet.

Length when assembled: 11″ (28cm) or 22″ (56cm) circumference

Width: 9.5″ (24cm)

Gauge

12 Sts x 16 rows in pattern = 4″ (10cm)

Materials

Yarn: I used one skein of We Crochet Brava Tweed in Heron (worsted, 97% Premium Acrylic, 3% Viscose, 218yds)

Alternatively, you can use any medium worsted #4 yarn.

Crochet hook: 7mm

Scissors, yarn needle.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Ch = chain

St = stitch

Sl St = slip stitch

HDC = half double crochet

Stitch used: Even Moss stitch.

Crochet Cowl Pattern Notes

• The cowl is worked flat, lengthwise, in back-and-forth rows, and then sewed together to form a circle.
• The Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
• You can make a wider cowl by chaining more for the circumference.
• You can make a taller neck warmer by working more rows.

Misty Crochet Neck Warmer Pattern Written Instructions

Ch 70 (23 inches) or any even number for your desired length (circumference).

Make sure to chain approximately 1 inch more because as you continue working in the next rows, the size will decrease by an inch due to the stitch pattern.

Row 1: Starting from the second Ch from hook work a *Sl St, then a HDC in the next chain. Repeat from * across the row. Work a Sl St in the last St. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: Work a *Sl St in the first St, then a HDC in the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. Work a Sl St in the last St. Ch 1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired size!

Assembling the Cowl

When you reach your desired size (my neck warmer has 40 rows), cut the yarn and leave approximately 25 inches of yarn tail for sewing. Thread your yarn needle, then fold it the way it is in the photo below, and sew the sides together. Make sure to align the rows on each side!

Weave in all ends, and it’s done!
